Apple Pie (Gluten Free, Dairy Free option, Refined Sugar Free)

It’s almost Thanksgiving! And that means one thing: PIE. Are you more of a turkey person or more interested in the sides? The sides are definitely my thing- I have so many wonderful family recipes. Corn pudding, green beans, eggplant casserole, pizza squash… I could go on. But don’t we all save room for dessert? I know I do!

Nothing says fall like apple pie. It’s just the best! And let’s be honest, we’re all here for the crumble topping because it’s the best part. I did a poll on my instagram for sweet potato pie vs apple pie and apple was the CLEAR winner. But I might’ve made them both just for funsies. 😉 This apple pie is super easy because you don’t have to make the crust yourself! I have tried 2 different gluten free pie crusts- one from wholly wholesome which I bought at Fresh Market, and one from Trader Joe’s and I liked them equally. I slightly preferred the crust from TJ’s because it didn’t crack like the other one did, which isn’t a huge issue, just your visual preference.

Like I said before, it’s all about the crumble! This one is super easy and perfect. All you do is throw oats, cinnamon, maple sugar, and butter in the food processor and blitz it until it’s crumbly. I personally prefer maple sugar over coconut sugar but I do think you could substitute coconut sugar- however, I haven’t tried it. I love this pie so much and I know you will too! I won’t lie I’ve made it twice and there have been zero leftovers. It’s also kid approved! My son ate a whole piece just last night. I can’t wait for you to try it. ingredients:

For the filling
  • 1 gluten free pie crust
  • 4.5c pink lady apples (about 4 apples), peeled and sliced
  • 2T maple sugar
  • 1t cinnamon
  • 1/2t allspice
  • 1/4t nutmeg
  • 3T melted butter or ghee
For the crumble
  • 1/2c oats
  • 3T maple sugar
  • 8T COLD butter, cut into pats
  • 1t cinnamon

instructions:

How to cook Apple Pie

For the filling
  1. Bake raw pie crust for 10 minutes at 350F. 
  2. Slice apples thinly and toss to coat with other ingredients. 
  3. Pour into pie crust.
For the crumble
  1. Place all ingredients in the food processor and blitz until crumbled evenly. 
  2. Pour on top of apples. 
  3. Bake at 350F for 1 hour.
